Some of you may be wondering where the name blimp originated from. If so, I’ll be more than happy to explain it to you. During World War II, it has been said that a military general made a trip to visit one of the airship stations that was run by the U.S. Navy. In trying to determine what materials an air ship was made out of, he then tapped his finger against the fully pressurized envelope of a Navy airship that at the time was not rigid. The general described the sound that it produced as a “blimp”, and airships have commonly been referred to as blimps ever since.
Blimps have been successfully used as part of advertising campaigns for several successful companies such as Goodyear, Fujifilm, McDonald’s and Budweiser, just to name a few. Adverting blimps often provide a very effective way to companies to advertise as the blimps are so highly visible. It is very common to see these blimps at major sporting events such as the Super Bowl. In such cases, the blimps often have the name and logo of one of the event sponsors on it. Blimps used for advertising are usually expensive. However, the initial cost is often well worth it because of how well they work to promote your company! Also, they can be release items such as confetti or prizes at certain pre-programmed intervals. Also, there are some blimp models that have strobe lights and/or can shoot out silly string, which can also add a sense of fun to your event. Nowadays, there are all kinds of neat added features that one can choose from in their advertising blimps. In addition to being used for advertising, blimps are also commonly used for aerial photography as this is a way to really get some spectacular shots. Some blimp companies even offer nighttime advertising that comes complete with nighttime signs that are brightly lit up. Also, blimps can successfully be used to assist in various military operations such as border patrol, maritime patrol, and anti-smuggling, just to name a few. One of the big advantages to blimp use in the military is that are able to either cruise on patrol or remain stationary for long, extended periods of time before they have to land to refuel.
